A colleague recently told me that when asked what people really want out of life, the top 5 things were: Fewer Hassles, More Choices, More Money, More Time, and No Worries. The number One answer for women was More Time. Hmmmmm, I said. I have to disagree with this study. Now, this was not the answer that my colleague expected. In actuality, he was trying to sell me on something that I wasn't quite buying. The reason I wasn't buying it is the following: we are all individuals, and we all want different things. I felt I couldn't be lumped in the same top 5 as everyone else. In fact, I said, my top 5 did not resemble these at all.
I pointed out that of these so-called top 5, "more choices" was a sham. In my opinion, we all have choices, and a world of opportunities waiting for us. It is our decision whether to go for it, make the choices, and hence take the chances. If a person feels stuck, or out of choices, they need to do nothing more than to take the steps to move themselves forward to allow these choices to come forth in their lives. I returned to college 20 years after receiving my B.A. in English Literature to pursue a second line of study in Biochemistry. Folks, the choice was mine, and my staffing career is the better for it.
Two of the choices, "no worries and no hassles" are just plain unlrealistic. These are gonna happen folks. This is real life, and worries and hassles are part of the road to success. Ultimately, we need to control our worries by compartmentalizing them.....and deal with the hassles the best we can. This is ok.
Money and time....perhaps those will always be on a list. But we can't always sit there and wish we had more money or more time. If it is to truly accomplish something meaningful in our lives, then we will find a way to make it happen. So, my friend asked, what is your top 5 then? Meaningful relationships, excitement, new opportunities, education, and travel. At least Something like that. What are your top 5?
