Everytime I open my email, log on to twitter, or read the posts on my "recruitment" groups on Linked In, I find a new common denominator. This "common denominator" is the recent trend towards training in the art of social networking. Some of the best and well-respected trainers in our industry are doing it, and some completey unknowns. It makes me wonder, who is giving the best information? And, who is really a trusted expert in the field?
Related to this is the boon of social networkers, under the guise of "Training Expert" who are really just trying to suck me in to some sort of pyramid scheme or otherwise, to attract more followers. How they make money off of this, I don't know. But it seems to be running amuck on Twitter and other social network sites.
So who can we trust to receive our information? After all, social networking sites can be very valuable to us in several ways. They disseminate our name out into cyber world to give us more visability. They allow us to connect with potential clients. They even put us in close range of those coveted resources we desperately need to fill our difficult requirements. Therefore, I find it to be a good thing. And if there is someone out there who can help me achieve more success in it, I am all for it.
I have not yet immersed myself in a training program, but am giving it great consideration. I have come to the conclusion that I will start with the trusted experts. After all, I know these names. I understand their committment to our industry, and distinct knowledge of it. If they are self-trained, it has probably been through their success and failure methods at the industry level . Therefore, I will relate to these folks in a better way, knowing their level of expertise at recruiting and staffing. Am I against giving a newbee a shot at it? Not at all. Just not for the time being. I think I will wait until they have a little more success under their belt.
